Why Me? was originally written at the request of the then CEO of the Dallas Chapter of the American Red Cross, Cheryl Sutterfeld-Jones to address the issue of loss and sadness for children. Originally it was titled, You’re Loved, But This You Knew. The ARC was already having success with Piper the Puppy, and Cheryl thought a storybook would be a nice addition. She told me to tell the child they are going to be sad, and mad, but that’s okay, and above all—they’re loved.
With this suggestion as guidance, I thought about the possibility of this verse for about three months. I made it a focus of my daily, twenty-minute meditation practice. The text was written in one day. Using chalk pastels and Q-Tip eyeshadow applicators, it then took six months to illustrate.
To date, the American Red Cross has used 4000 copies in their emergency response vehicles throughout the U.S. Word has it that they have given as many to adults as children.
