Storing Produce & Organizing the Fridge…It’s in the GreenBag!

Isn’t it fun to peek into people’s refrigerators?  Blogs, websites, and magazine all offer up ideas for feeding your family in a healthy way. Nice, but when you are unorganized, nothing really works well. You arrive home from a busy day, have good intentions, look in the fridge at a jumbled mess, and phone for take out. The best answer: Be Organized…Know What’s in the Fridge. The photo above is not a photo staged for the blog, it is how my refrigerator looks on any given day. I can quickly evaluate what’s on hand, and what I can do with it. I can easily see what I might need to fill in with, as I pass by the market. Best of all…it only takes a few minutes to organize, and saves you both time and money.

Here’s What You Need:

Debbie Meyer GreenBags (Yes, they really work). You can find them at most large chain grocery stores in the “As Seen on TV section” or available through the Debbie Meyer website.

Blue Painter’s Tape available at any paint or home store. It also comes in other colors.

Sharpie Marker, Fine or Medium Point.

Here’s What You Do:

Do not wash produce before putting in the GreenBag, or GreenBox. Water is the biggest enemy to stored produce. Place produce in the bag with a paper towel or cotton cloth. The towel, or cloth will help absorb moisture. If you see moisture building in the bag, open the bag, wipe it dry with a new clean cloth, and replace the old paper towel or cloth if needed. I keep a stack of white, 100% cotton dishcloths just for this purpose.  Look closely, in the first photo inside the refrigerator. Notice how the kale is wrapped. This will give your produce a longer life. Wash when ready to use. If pressed for time, you can wash salad greens, or kale, a day or two before, dry well, place in a cotton dishcloth, wrap tightly, and place in a GreenBag. No more need to buy the “pre-washed, bag-salad” at the store. On the tape, write both the date, and the day of the purchase, and the contents. Place the tape on the end of the bag.
